Using a 2Timer & Moultrie Game Camera to Pattern Big Bucks

By Mike Lambeth

In most areas of the country, the rut is beginning or will be starting soon. This is the one time of the year when big bucks let their guards down briefly during their quest for hot does that are receptive to be bred. As predictable as bucks can be during the rut, they can be just as unpredictable. However, no need to fret there are tools you can utilize to help shift the odds in your favor.

Generally, by now, bucks have made their primary scrapes. Bucks tend to use some of the same areas annually such as under overhanging limbs on the edges of woodlots. Bucks have a daily routine established where they periodically check their scrapes in hopes that a doe in estrous has left her calling card.

These areas are excellent areas to hang a game camera nearby to monitor which bucks are checking scrapes, and at what times they come by. Thanks to Moultrie’s new Deluxe Tree Mount, your game cameras can now be placed at precise angles to capture all the action when it happens.

2Timer Scent Dispenser Another cutting edge product that can be used in conjunction with your Moultrie game camera is Code Blue’s 2Timer Scent Dispenser. This unique scent dispenser has two tanks—each one holding 2.5 ounces of your favorite deer scent or attractant. The unit is fully programmable allowing you to preset multiple dispensing times each day.

I like to hang a few 2Timer Scent Dispensers at separate locations with a Moultrie game camera nearby. I use Code Blue’s Whitetail Doe Estrous in one tank, and Code Blue’s Whitetail Buck Urine in the other side. I set my timer to alternate dispensing times, and I have a deadly combination.

Record all the activity on your Moultrie game camera, conveniently placed nearby, to know you helped stack the odds in your favor. You will now know in advance which bucks are using the scrapes in your area, and what times they are using them so you can hunt accordingly. Gone is the need to make repetitive trips into your area to freshen scrapes—Code Blue’s 2Timer does it for you automatically!
