Deer Feeder Battery Frequently Asked Questions
- What type battery should I use in feeders and cameras?
- Answer: Use the best 6-volt alkaline battery you can buy, such as, Energizer or Duracell. We suggest using Moultrie’s 6 volt 5 amp hour rechargeable battery, because it is a “rechargeable” battery it will save you money.
- How long do I need to charge my batteries?
- Answer: Eight to ten hours is sufficient for the 6 volt rechargeable batteries, if you are using the Moultrie floating charger, the green l.e.d. will flash when the battery is fully charged. Please don’t over charge your battery.
- Will my solar panel keep my battery charged?
- Answer: Not completely. It will extend periods between charges significantly, but has a very low amperage output and will not completely recharge a battery.
- Will weather affect my battery’s performance?
- Answer: Yes, definitely. Extremes in temperature adversely effect battery life and performance, always use the best battery possible.
- Can I use my car battery charger to charge my feeder battery?
- Answer: No! Your rechargeable feeder battery is a sealed lead acid battery and must be charged slowly to avoid gases forming and expanding and ruining your battery. Always use a charger that is less than one amp at six volts.
- Will my 6-volt feeder run on 12 volts?
- Answer: No, twelve volts will burn your feeder circuit board up.
- Will the Moultrie Pro Magnum and Feed Caster run on a 6-volt lantern battery?
- Answer: No, the motor is much larger than the motor in the smaller feeders and requires more amperage. They must have the six volt 12 amp. Hour battery.
- If my battery goes dead, should I recharge it immediately?
- Answer: You should recharge it as soon as possible. Leaving it dead for an extended period of time will extremely shorten the life of you battery, and may cause it to sulfate and not take a charge at all.
- What is the overall life of my rechargeable battery?
- Answer: The extended life of your battery should be 3 to 5 years, and you should get between 2 to 3 months of use depending on the weather and demand in your feeders, and 3 or 4 weeks in our digital camera between charges.
- How do I test my battery?
- Answer: We suggest buying a small digital volt-ohm meter to use for testing. It is a cheap, but extremely useful tool for your feeder and camera battery testing.
